چکیده

Abstract Sea pens are some of the most important structural species in soft bottom benthic communities. Pteroeides spinosum is a shallow-water pennatulacean (Cnidaria: Octocorallia: Pennatulacea) habiting NE Atlantic-Mediterranean bottoms. In this study, sixteen colonies collected from NW Mediterranean (Cap de Creus, Spain) at 99–106 m depth July (2012), were used to acquire information their reproductive biology, and enable comparison with other pennatulaceans. Our gonochoric showing bimodal oocyte frequency distribution an unimodal spermatocyst diameter distribution. All polyp leaves contained oocytes spermatocysts different size classes, those small translucent spermatocysts/ (size-class I) often found near base or lower end gastrovascular cavities polyps. The largest observed was 668 μm for 687 oocytes. Mean potential relative fecundity (PRF) ranged between 7–17 per polyp. effective effort (ERE) reached value ca. 30,000 large colony. As all pennatulaceans previously studied, no sign hermaphroditism internal fertilization detected our .

The Global Diversity of Sea Pens (Cnidaria: Octocorallia: Pennatulacea)

Recent advances in deep-sea exploration technology coupled with an increase in worldwide biotic surveys, biological research, and underwater photography in shallow water marine regions such as coral reefs, has allowed for a relatively rapid expansion of our knowledge in the global diversity of many groups of marine organisms. This paper is part of the PLoS ONE review collection of WoRMS (the Wo...

Calamenenes--aromatic bicyclic sesquiterpenes--from the Indian gorgonian Subergorgia reticulata (Ellis and Solander, 1786).

Three aromatic sesquiterpene derivatives, (+)-(7R, 10S)-2-methoxy calamenene (1), (+)-(7R, 10S)-2,5-dimethoxy calamenene (2) and (+)-(7R, 10S)-2-methoxy-5-acetoxy calamenene (3) were isolated from the methanol extract of the Indian gorgonian Subergorgia reticulata. Compound 2 has not been previously described in the literature. Compound 3 has not been isolated previously from a natural source. ...

Protracted oogenesis and annual reproductive periodicity in the deepsea pennatulacean Halipteris finmarchica (Anthozoa, Octocorallia)

Halipteris finmarchica is one of the most common species of deep-sea pennatulacean corals in the Northwest Atlantic; it was recently determined to act as a biogenic substrate for other species and as a nursery for fish larvae. Its reproductive cycle was investigated in colonies sampled in 2006 and 2007 along the continental slope of Newfoundland and Labrador (Canada). Halipteris finmarchica exh...
